Foreword to the Torch

In his foreword to The Torch for the Definitive Meaning, Drupon Khen Rinpoche Karma Lhabu explains his reason for founding MTS and how it unfolded.

With the heartfelt prayer that the precious teachings of the Buddha, the source of every benefit and joy for all beings, may propagate and thrive, I shall relate the objective and evolution of the Marpa Translation Society.
At my humble request, the society’s name and emblem were joyfully bestowed by the Lord of Refuge who has passed into bliss, Yongzin Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. Its objective is to assist in the widespread promulgation of the precious teachings of the Buddha and to help fulfil the wishes of those who practice the dharma.
On my travels throughout the East and West, I have seen that the numbers of oral and written translators are limited and that translators and translations are akin to merchants and merchandise, with very few working in accord with the dharma. This, together with the fact that the dharma books themselves are very expensive, makes for an extremely difficult situation for dharma practitioners who generally have limited resources.
Having seen this and wishing to help, I started to teach the Tibetan language. Initially, I taught it to the international students at Thrangu Sekhar Retreat Centre as a supplementary class for two years, to the best of my ability and disregarding various challenges along the way. This produced favourable results, so I then established a formal Tibetan language programme. Through this, we have been able to train numerous translators of varied linguistic backgrounds, such that we have now translated and continue to translate the collected works of different masters, major treatises, words of advice, instruction manuals, hagiographies and so forth, into several languages.
I would like to express my hope that the translators continue their activities with solely the precious teachings in mind rather than regarding the dharma as a source of financial gain where the translators become traders and the translations commodities. I also sincerely wish that the translations provide some service to those who want to study or research Buddhism.
Coming to the matter at hand, despite being fully occupied with study, contemplation and meditation, my translator, Gelong Kunga, assiduously applied himself in his session breaks to translate many oral teachings and texts into English. Included among them is this current publication, The Torch for The Definitive Meaning.
Since he has received instructions on this text multiple times and has also completed several rounds of the preliminary practices, I expect this translation to be of high quality. I sincerely rejoice and commend him for his efforts, and I hope and pray from the bottom of my heart that readers will find favourable conditions to practice these teachings.

༄༅། །སྐྱེ་དགུའི་ཕན་བདེ་མ་ལུས་པའི་འབྱུང་གནས་རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་པ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས་པའི་སྨོན་འདུན་སྙིང་ལ་བཅངས་ནས་གང་ཞིག་གླེང་བར་བྱ་བ་ནི། སྒྲ་བསྒྱུར་མར་པ་གླིང་ཞེས་པའི་སྒྲ་བསྒྱུར་ཚོགས་པ་འདིའི་དམིགས་ཡུལ་དང་བརྒྱུད་རིམ་སྐོར་ཡིན།
