Laziness is to not look at your mind!
Only those who have faith and who are diligent can learn real meditation; those who are lazy will never get it.
Some people think that only lazy people come to meditate, while the diligent read books. In fact, it’s the opposite. Lazy people study books; diligent people try their best to meditate.
I say because when you study, you can read this and that, search for information, and ask other people questions, but none of these things require you look at your own mind and find the answers yourself. It’s the lazy approach.
If you are really training in meditation, the teacher will not initially tell you how the mind is. As soon as you are told, you will memorise the explanation and as soon as you sit on the cushion to meditate, you will just keep repeating those words to yourself. What good will that do?
For example, in the last meditation session I was giving the instructions to ‘rest’ and ‘do not rest’, alternatively.
I am guessing that many of you were merely repeating the words of the instruction to yourselves – ‘rest’ ‘do not rest’ – without knowing what is to rest or not rest.
